Technology
Barristers from Cloisters have been at the forefront of important work examining the interplay between artificial intelligence, technology, equality, human rights, employment law and data protection, working with business, unions, individuals and policy makers.
Their work has been widely recognised: Robin Allen KC and Dee Masters were shortlisted for the COGX 2021 Global Leadership Award, and they are shortlisted for the Legal Business Awards TMT (Technology, Media & Telecommunications) Team of the Year 2023.
Institutional clients have included the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation, the Trades Union Congress, the Departments for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, and Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, the Ada Lovelace Institute, the UN Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
Key papers include: "Technology Managing People – the legal implications” (2021) which was published by the TUC, “Regulating for an Equal AI: A New Role for Equality Bodies” (2020) which was published by Equinet and “In the matter of automated data processing in government decision making” (2019) which was published by The Legal Education Fund.
In April 2024, the TUC published the Artificial Intelligence (Regulation and Employment Rights) Bill written by Robin Allen KC and Dee Masters (with assistance from Jon Cook and Grace Corby).
Cloisters barristers have also recently created a bespoke training programme for UK regulators funded by the Council of Europe and the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation which explored the principle of non-discrimination in the context of artificial intelligence across a range of sectors from employment law to commerce to criminal justice.
