Josh Jackson advises on landmark Guyanese climate case

Two Guyanese citizens filed a climate case before the Guyanese Constitutional Court to challenge oil and gas production off the coast of Guyana on the grounds it violates the constitutional right to a healthy environment.
The projects under review are projected to extract 9 billion barrels of oil and result in 3.87 gigatons of greenhouse emissions. The applicants claim, inter alia, that the State’s facilitation of the projects is unconstitutional on the basis the projects will substantially contribute to global warming, sea level rise and ocean acidification, thus causing significant harm to the environment, Guyanese citizens, and future generations.
Joshua Jackson and Richard Lord QC (Brick Court Chambers) are instructed by the applicants’ Guyanese legal team, comprised of Melinda Janki and Ronald Burch-Smith, to advise and provide support throughout proceedings.
