Jonathan Mitchell KC to Retire
Written by Cloisters
Cloisters are sad to announce that, after a long and illustrious career at the Bar, Jonathan Mitchell KC is set to retire at the end of this year.
Jonathan was called to the Bar on 13th July 1979 having worked at renowned firms Simpson and Marwick, and Allan McDougall, and joined us at Cloisters in 2015.
Throughout his 43-year career at the Bar, Jonathan has acted in over 200 reported cases and thousands of unreported ones in the Court of Session, the Sheriff Court, the EAT and employment tribunals, and the Upper Tribunal. His departure follows his most recent success in the case of For Women Scotland for Judicial Review of the revised statutory guidance produced by the Scottish Ministers under section 7 of the Gender Representation on Public Boards (Scotland) Act 2018, [2022] CSOH 90. Jonathan acted for the Equality and Human Rights Commission, the full judgement for which can be found here.
Head of Chambers Martyn McLeish said:
‘Not only has Jonathan had an outstanding career as a barrister, but he has made a huge contribution to chambers life, offering advice on the trickiest of legal issues, and offering encouragement and advice to members of chambers. The connection between Cloisters and its associate tenants from Scotland is really special, and Jonathan will be greatly missed. All at Cloisters wish him a very happy retirement’.
Jonathan’s retirement has been captured by the Scottish Legal News in the following article.
Cloisters would like to thank Jonathan for all his work and commitment over the years, as well as being a valued member of the Cloisters team.
